Unfortunately, I haven't really had any time to play at all due to school and other life events, so I never managed to get much higher than top 100 on the ladder. In that post, I promised to post the other team I was working on after I refined it a bit more. ![]() ![]() This chatbox takes advantage of the fact that the lower left hand corner of the battle screen does not need to be viewable by the user.įinally, changing the moves to be 2x2 and the team to be 2x3 is honestly just a homage to the actual Pokemon games! Users who are familiar with Pokemon would likely appreciate this change. If y'all remember, I posted a team I used to get top 10 with gallade a little while back. Since the website already uses the tab system (see top of page), I used the same tab system for switching between the chat and battle dialogue to build off of what users are already familiar with. I converted the chatlog to a minimizable widget at the bottom of the screen, which has separate tabs for chatting and reading battle information. I moved trainer profiles to the side so that full screen space can be utilized, and removed the section for public chatrooms as it isn’t widely used during battle and adds clutter to the page. The main point of Pokemon Showdown is the game, and with a larger screen the graphics can be fully appreciated. Aesthetic improvements have been limited by the lack of developers their staff only consists of 6 developers who are not being paid to develop the game, and they likely have other commitments that limit them from developing it further. Overall, Pokemon Showdown is great for what it’s designed to do. It’s also a little troublesome to read two streams of information from one location, though the website makes good use of fonts (bold for Pokemon moves) and text highlights (for chat) to distinguish between battle and chat information. You can also see that the second column condenses actual chatting with battle information in one space, causing your chat to move by a lot quicker than usual and making it not conducive to chatting (partially explaining why few people chat during battle). The screen does not get any larger than this, which is unfortunate, since the main point of this page is the game. … the second column takes up way too much space, and there is no way for it to be minimized. Most people don’t really use the third column in battle, so I’m not sure why they show this tab to first-time users, as it makes the page look messy. ![]() The biggest weakness of Pokemon Showdown is the page space usage. This means the user does not have to remember what Pokemon they have already sent out, which removes a burden for the user. You can see in the image above that my opponent knows about all except two of my Pokemon. Pokemon Showdown has a simple, grid-based layout that makes it easy distinguish separate functions of the page: first-time users have no problem identifying that the first column is for battling, the second column is for chatting with the opponent and logging battle details, and the third section is for joining public chatrooms.įor the battle section, the color-coded moves corresponding to the games help users identify movesets easily, and the Pokemon sprites help users quickly scan their team, which is helpful in random battles.Īdditionally, the pokeballs show the user what Pokemon the opponent knows about.
